The TRIAC Mandate: The Midas touch to Tourism Development in Nigeria
There is a popular saying that “when you failed to plan, you planned to fail” and “man without vision is dead”, therefore in a quest to reposition travel and tourism sector in Nigeria the Executive President of Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) Mr. Nkereuwem Onung launched a TRIAC mandate (Tourism Marketing, Research and Development, Insurance Policy, Advocacy and Capacity Building) to enable the federation under his leadership to reposition Nigeria as a leading tourism country not only in West Africa but also meet up with the global standard.
Speaking at the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Federation which held on the 21st July, 2022 at Rockview Hotel (Royale) in Abuja , the FTAN president noted that the TRIAC mandate would be instrumental in repositioning the industry, he said, “...which allows us to do business with larger society without infringing on the mandates of the associations under the federation”. He also emphasized that FTAN shall continue to collaborate, lobby, and consult stakeholders in the industry, whilst we jealously guard the interest of our members.
According to Mr. Onung, the TRIAC mandate involves a strategic tourism marketing through the public and private sector partnership for the identification of the needs, wants and satisfaction of the segments market in the planning and designing of local, regional, national and international tourism products and services, noting that “we are looking forward to a sector that guarantees inclusiveness.”
He also recognizes the importance of research and data for the development of any organization; it is only through research and data collection that one can measure and assess the growth, forecast and understand the characteristics of his/her business.
Insurance is also a very important and unavoidable component of the sector that can not be overlooked hence it is a way of providing travel safety and guarantees of compensation.
Human capacity development is also a component that the mandate intends to address. The president revealed that the federation is seriously looking into it as a paramount yardstick in transforming attitudes and behaviors through inculcating knowledge and developing skills of the industry-stakeholders. This will not only ensure professionalism but also sustainability. In his words, “On this ground, we have had talks with different industry-based stakeholders on collaborations on making the capacity building bid a worthwhile effort to position the federation.”
Conclusively, many stakeholders in the industry described the mandate as timely and also assured him of their unalloyed support and also described FTAN as a “New FTAN” Chief Coker said.
