Okpambe Cultural and Fishing Festival
Okpambe Cultural and Fishing Festival is an annual one-week festivity observed in the first quarter of every year between January and March at Okum Lake, Yala-Obubra, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State. During the celebration, thousands of fishermen and women with local fishing equipment line up the coast of Okum Lake to compete for the biggest catch. The event also involves the Moninkim Carnival, Moninkim Maiden Contest, Cave treasure search, Beach Search, Picnic and beach festival, regatta, paddling competition, fish roasting competition, local wrestling, swimming competition, Indigenous arts/, local delicacy/Agricultural produce exhibition, gala and award night, Etc. Every year, the event is held, as usual at Okum Lake with several programs designed to accommodate and encourage participation from across the globe as well as entertain and educate our guests and tourists with the rich cultural heritage of the people of Yala-Obubra. It is also a platform for farmers and entrepreneurs, young and old, to discover new opportunities for collaborations, create synergies, and excel in their various disciplines as well as learn how to coexist peacefully with people from other ethnic, religious and geographical backgrounds thereby enthroning peace in the Local Government, State and nation. It will also help to discover and develop talents and skills and create a viable platform for marketing them. Before the festival, the fishermen usually participate in intensive training on fish farming to build their capacities and create opportunities for collaboration and growth. The Organizers produce, not only fishermen with the biggest catch but also equip and promote winners to compete favourably with their international counterparts. Also, the Organizers stage "MONINKIM INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT" to produce a second ambassador for the festival. The FISHERMAN WITH the BIGGEST CATCH, the WINNER OF THE MONINKIM MAIDEN PAGEANT, the HIGHEST BIDDER FOR THE BIGGEST CATCH, and the WINNERS OF THE CAVE TREASURE SEARCH AND BEACH SEARCH are always declared the ambassadors/ faces of Okpambe Cultural and Fishing Festival annually.
